Mega millions jackpot

The Mega Millions jackpot is a large, multi-state lottery in the United States. Players select six numbers, with the first five being numbered 1-70 and the last numbered 1-25. To win the jackpot, a player must match all six numbers.

The jackpot starts at $40 million and increases with each drawing if it is not won. The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record was $1.537 billion, which was won on October 23, 2018 by one ticket holder in South Carolina.

In addition to the jackpot, there are also several other prize tiers, with smaller cash awards given out to players who match fewer numbers. Players can also choose to add the Megaplier option to their ticket, which increases the value of non-jackpot prizes by a multiple of 2-5, depending on the Megaplier number drawn.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 11 p.m. Eastern Time.

It is important to note that lottery games like Mega Millions, despite the large prize, have low odds of winning and are mainly marketed for entertainment. Buying a large amount of tickets doesn't increase the chances to win, Lottery is usually a form of regressive tax, since the majority of players come from low-income groups and will spend a larger percentage of their income on lottery tickets than wealthier players.
